Swimming In A Dream

My ART4FREEDOM was created at a time in my life where people in my city, Hong Kong, were fighting in the streets for freedom and against government suppression - while at the same time, I was stuck in a day job with unreasonable pressure from the boss and a huge lack of freedom for the employees. And most pressing at that time; the lack of freedom to be able to leave the office and/or work from home for our own safety during the time street fights and tear gassing was happening right nearby our office, always having to wait for permission from the management to be able to leave. While always trying to fulfil others’ expectations of me, I realised that I had completely given up my own freedom and dreams.

My new philosophy on freedom is something I recently heard: Do and say as you like, as long as you don’t impose your will on others. Or as philosopher Corliss Lamont put it nicely: “True freedom is the capacity for acting according to one’s true character, to be altogether one’s self, to be self-determined and not subject to outside coercion.”

This artwork was created from a deep subconscious desire in me for freedom, and I identified with the freedom this elephant represented to me. Soon after, I left that job in pursuit of a better and more freedom-filled future. IAM4FREEDOM!
