The Black Seas of Infinity
My ART4FREEDOM is about how the intensity of a dream reminded me about the importance of personal expression and freedom.
I'm a writer & artist. Three months after I met and a Colombian refugee by the name of Monica Castillo, I ended up in the hospital with brain cancer. They told me I had a 50% chance. I had accumulated a tight circle of friends and yet, to my amazement, almost none of them visited me in ICU. But she did. Everyday.
That's when I decided that she was the one for me.
Fast forward 6 years, and she was killed by a hit and run driver. Despite an extensive campaign, the culprit was never found.
I fell into a slump and it was not until another writer by the name of Wayne Simmons asked me to review his book, that I realized my priorities.
Among other things, finishing my book “The Black Seas of Infinity” was one of them.
While back in writing mode, I had an intense dream, one where I was chasing the sound of her voice through the woods. I finally came upon her in a clearing, and she was in a trance, pouring cups of blood on her body. I woke in a sweat, deeply disturbed by how real the dream was, and how much I missed Monica.
I couldn't erase it from my mind. That scene became the basis for this painting, an interior scene, and the cover for my novel. The power and danger of absolute freedom encapsulated. It only seemed right that I dedicated the book to her. IAM4FREEDOM!
