Oppression
My ART4FREEDOM is in honour of the black lives movement. It has touched me deeply and has made me feel obligated to learn more about the matter. I wanted to do what I could to make a difference, even if it is just a little bit. I wanted to create a picture that was impactful but not shocking, one of those that makes you think deeply about something or makes you see things from a different perspective. I tried to get the message across of what white supremacy does to its victims. It takes away the freedom to speak your mind and vocalize your opinion, it makes it difficult to breath for the sadness that it must be to not be able to live your life to the fullest, and also, I wanted to honour the death of George Floyd and all of the beautiful souls that have been lost until today, just for the color of their skin. They took away their right to live, which is a human right, and that makes it hard to breathe just thinking about it. This is why I painted white paint marks on the mouth and neck of the woman, because paint stays on and is really hard to remove, and it’s white to address the white supremacy. Last but not least, I painted a woman to also address women’s oppression, which is also still a big issue today and it often goes along with racism. I think this painting makes perfect sense to be associated with ART4FREEDOM because it represents oppression, lack of freedom and the loss of human rights. IAM4FREEDOM!
