The Freedom of the Concubine
My ART4FREEDOM is a short film created with my team mate, Caitlin Smartt.
Set in ancient China, a concubine who longs for her freedom meets a bird who will grant her wish in exchange for a good deed. The inspiration for the piece was based on the feeling of confinement that many girls in Asian cultures feel due to cultural pressure. On a personal level, I have dealt with strict Asian parents and for this reason, have felt myself confined in my own room for a long time. After research into ancient Chinese culture, we found that the story of a concubine presented the best allegory for this, while her interactions with the bird provided a sense of hope. The painterly and free-form art style also conveys the sense of freedom of expression. May all females break free and be free to be themselves. IAM4FREEDOM!
